No. 14 CNU Women’s Lacrosse Heads to Randolph-Macon and No. 2 Salisbury to Wrap Up Regular Season

ASHLAND, Va. – Entering the squad's final two regular season contests, the No. 14 Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team has been on a roll and will look to continue its winning ways as the Captains head to Randolph-Macon on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest before squaring off against No. 2 Salisbury in a top-20 showdown on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Nearing the end of the regular season, CNU currently sports a 16-1 record and is riding a program-best 16-game winning streak. Randolph-Macon sits at 11-4 overall, and Salisbury enters the weekend with a pristine 14-0 mark.

During 10 previous meetings with RMC, Christopher Newport holds a 4-6 all-time record, including a 21-8 victory in 2012. Salisbury has accumulated a 9-0 mark against the Captains and took last year's meeting, 19-5, in Newport News.

One of the most well-balanced teams in the nation, CNU ranks among the national leaders in nearly every major statistical category. Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport is first overall in points, second in scoring offense and scoring margin, and fourth in scoring defense. In their 17 games this season, the Captains have out-scored the opposition by almost 13 goals per game.

Fantastic on the defensive end, CNU has limited their opponents to 5.59 goals per game. Hanna Slough has anchored that effort, leading the nation in goals-against-average while tacking on a .480 save percentage as well. Emily Johnson, Kelly Lane, and Rachel Tomlinson have also caused at least 20 turnovers apiece to help stifle the opposition.

The offense has been headlined by Ashton Marshall, who earned USA South Player of the Year honors while ranking in the top-10 nationally with 67 goals and 83 points. Elena Obregon has also scored 49 times, while Lauren King and Becca Geist have chipped in with 28 assists apiece.

Handling draws at an incredible rate, CNU has recorded 273 draw controls this season, which is just 10 shy of matching the program's all-time record. King leads the way with 58, while Geist has secured 46. Tomlinson and Marshall have also notched at least 25 each.

Emily Lynch has been at the forefront of the Randolph-Macon attack, collecting a team-high 64 points and 48 goals. Betsy Hebert has been the Yellow Jackets' top facilitator, dishing out 20 assists to go along with 21 goals. Katie Russo, Shannon Jamieson, and Jenelle Whitman have all scored at least 20 times as well.

RMC's defense has been led by Nicole Woodworth, who boasts a .504 save percentage and a 10.76 goals-against-average. Lynch also leads the team with 19 caused turnovers, while Rachel Johnsen has forced 13 to go along with 58 draw controls and 34 ground balls.

On a 14-game winning streak, Salisbury has been dominant in 2013. The squad currently ranks in the top-six in points, scoring offense, scoring defense, and scoring margin. Katie Bollhorst has been the star so far, leading the team with 68 points after tallying 39 assists and 29 goals. Lauren Feusahrens has also scored 36 times this season, while Bethany Baer, Maggie Roundy, and Shelby Nemecek have at least 20 goals as well.

Ashton Wheatley has been the team's top goalie, posting a .527 save percentage to go along with a 5.89 goals-against-average. Meghan Toomey also leads the team with 21 caused turnovers, while Baer and Laura Maskell have forced 19 each.

Done with the regular season after Sunday, Christopher Newport will begin its preparations for postseason action. After the Captains won their eighth straight USA South title, the squad earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, which will begin next month.
