ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The top-seeded N.C. Wesleyan Bishops (13-7) won their fourth straight conference championship on Sunday, defeating the Christopher Newport Captains (16-5) in the final, 9-0. CNU falls in their third straight USA South Championship appearance.
The Captains battled in doubles play, taking eight points combined against the stellar Bishops tandems. The second-ranked pairing in the South Atlantic, Robert Kjellberg and Artsiom Prostak, dispatched the Captains top pair, 8-1. In No. 2 and 3, though, CNU took three and four points, respectively, led by junior
Joey Manilla and
Will Sloan at the third position.
In singles play, Manilla forced a second-set tiebreak in the longest match of the day before ultimately falling 6-4, 7-6 (6-1). Seniors
Kyle Tobin and
Robbie Wagner both battled in their final appearance, with Tobin facing Prostak in a 6-3, 6-1 final, and Wagner falling to Peter Hviid by a 6-2, 6-1 finish.
Joey Manilla was named to the USA South All-Tournament team.
The Captains finish out the season with a 16-5 overall mark, the second most wins in program history and most since 2008.
