No. 19 CNU Women's Lacrosse Takes Down Adrian, 13-9, in Neutral Site Bout

Box Score

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Yielding just nine goals in a bout featuring a pair of 2012 NCAA Tournament participants, the No. 19 Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team used a stifling defensive effort and another excellent showing by its offensive attack to knock out Adrian, 13-9, during a neutral site showdown on Friday morning at Chaplin Park Field on Hilton Head Island.

On a five-game roll, the Captains now sit at 5-1 on the season. Adrian, who entered the contest undefeated as the reigning champs of the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference, now stand at 3-1 on the year. With the victory, CNU secured its second win of the 2013 campaign against a team from last year's NCAA Tournament after also sending No. 15 Washington & Lee down for the count on February 23.

Anchoring the offensive attack, Jessica Singer continued her recent surge with a season-high three goals against the Bulldogs. She has now tallied 14 points during the team's current four-game road trip. Just as potent on the offensive end, Lauren King chipped in with a three-point day as well after scoring twice and adding an assist.

Doing her typical damage on the offensive end, Ashton Marshall also landed a pair of blows while tacking on two goals, which bumped her season total to 26. Currently, she ranks second in the nation in scoring this season. She also looked strong on defense, keeping Adrian off-balance while causing a turnover and securing five draw controls during a rocky stretch for the Bulldogs.

Refusing to pull any punches against their top-flight competition, the Captains eventually saw five players score at least two goals during the game. In addition to Singer, King, and Marshall, Kylie Chaplin and Rachel Tomlinson also scorched the back of the net twice. Along with those standouts, Becca Geist added a goal and an assist, Rachel Wall scored once, and Grace Valentine and Elena Obregon chipped in with a pair of helpers on Friday.

In addition to her work on the offensive end, Tomlinson also caused a pair of turnovers and scooped up a team-high six ground balls. Overall, Christopher Newport secured 17 ground balls during the contest, including a pair by Singer, Emily Johnson, and Caitlin Osbourne.

Anchoring the team between the pipes, Hanna Slough made her fifth straight start and tallied five saves during her time in goal. After halftime, Hannah Wilkerson went the distance in the second half, posting five saves as well while keeping the Bulldogs on the ropes.

Next up for CNU, Christopher Newport will square off with Virginia Wesleyan when the squad goes toe-to-toe with the Marlins on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Captains Turf Field.
