DECATUR, Ga. – Utilizing a potent offensive attack, which saw seven players score at least two goals, the No. 19 Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team cruised to a 22-3 victory over Agnes Scott in the squad's USA South opener on Wednesday evening.
Continuing her outstanding start to the season,
Ashton Marshall led the team with four goals to go along with a pair of assists.
Elena Obregon also added six points, including three goals, while
Jessica Singer scored twice and dished out three helpers.
With the victory, CNU extended its winning streak to four games and improved to 4-1 on the season. The setback drops Agnes Scott to 1-3.
Although the Scotties opened the scoring less than a minute into the game, the Captains quickly shook off the momentary lapse and unloaded on their conference rivals. Serving as the team's chief facilitator in the beginning of the game, Obregon set up three straight goals by
Becca Geist,
Lauren King, and Marshall during a one-minute surge that gave the visitors a 3-1 lead at 26:13.
Showing off her complete repertoire, Obregon stepped up and scored CNU's fourth goal before Singer joined in the act after converting off of a pass from Marshall. Already up 5-1, Christopher Newport never slowed down. During another eight-minute spurt in the middle of the first half, Geist, King, Marshall, Singer, and Obregon all added their second goal of the game on the way to an imposing 10-1 edge.
Although the offense continued to light up the scoreboard, the defense also had some shining moments. Geist and
Rachel Tomlinson each caused turnovers during the waning moments of the first half, while
Hanna Slough stepped up and made a nice save on a bullet by the Scotties to keep Agnes Scott's offense under wraps.
While the defense clamped down on the hosts, the offense never missed a beat. Singer set up back-to-back goals by Obregon and Marshall before the two standouts added unassisted scores during the final nine minutes of the half.
Shannon Fluharty also found the back of the net in the first stanza after depositing a pass from
Grace Valentine.
With a 14-1 lead at halftime, Christopher Newport continued to receive contributions from a host of Captains following the break. Tomlinson opened the scoring in the second half, and after the Scotties broke through for the second time in the game, she assisted on
Rachel Wall's first career goal at 22:17.
Showing off the team's depth, CNU's young guns continued to shine. Freshman
Olivia McMurtrie tacked on her first career score, while fellow first-year standout
Nina Stinson added her fourth of the season. Along with the newcomers,
Jessica Kelly came through with a pair of rockets late in the game and helped out on Wall's second goal with 10 minutes left in regulation.
Alexis Mooney also found an opening in the final few minutes to help polish off the 22-3 victory.
Overall, the Captains held an 18-9 advantage in draw controls and a 32-8 edge in shots. Slough and
Hannah Wilkerson split time between the pipes, making a save each to help anchor the squad's defensive efforts.
Christopher Newport will conclude its road trip on Friday when the team squares off with Adrian in a neutral site bout in Hilton Head, South Carolina at 10:30 a.m.
