CNU Women’s Lacrosse Remains at No. 19 in the National Rankings; Opens USA South Play at Agnes Scott on Wednesday

DECATUR, Ga. -- With two more convincing wins over the past week, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team remained at No. 19 in the IWLCA national rankings and will look to continue its early-season success on Wednesday when the squad kicks off USA South action at Agnes Scott at 4 p.m.

Holding steady in the rankings, the Captains did pick up a few new supporters in the latest poll, nearly doubling their vote total from last week. CNU earned 46 votes in the rankings, sitting 15 shy of No. 18 Mary Washington. The top of the poll remains unchanged with Trinity holding down the top spot and Salisbury, Cortland, Gettysburg, and Middlebury rounding out the top-five.

Opening conference action this week, Christopher Newport will kick off its final USA South campaign with a spring break showdown against Agnes Scott in Decatur, Georgia. CNU enters the battle with a 3-1 record, while the Scotties come into play at 1-2.

In three all-time meetings between the two programs, the Captains hold a perfect 3-0 record. Last season, CNU took
down the Aggies, 22-3, in Newport News.

Starting the season off in fine fashion, Ashton Marshall has been electric so far this year. The junior juggernaut currently leads the team with 20 goals and has scored no fewer than three in every game in 2013. A consistent force on the offensive end, she opened the year with a seven-goal surge against Mary Washington before adding three in a victory over Washington & Lee and five apiece against St. Mary's and Lynchburg.

Also adding a potent force to the CNU attack, freshman Elena Obregon ranks second on the squad with eight goals, while Jessica Singer has chipped in with six. Becca Geist and Kylie Chaplin also have four apiece, and Lauren King leads the way with six assists.

Goalie Hanna Slough has been terrific in her first four games, posting a .515 save percentage to go along with an 8.99 goals-against average. She has been aided on the defensive end by Emily Johnson, who leads the team with 10 caused turnovers. Geist and King have also secured 13 draw controls apiece for the Captains.

Notching their first victory of the year against Hollins last Saturday, the Scotties fell in their next outing after dropping a 13-7 decision at Meredith. Caroline Recio looked strong in her first conference game of the year, posting three goals to go along with two assists against Meredith. Lexi Pulice Farrow also scored three times during the game.

Emerging as the team's top goalie, freshman Ashley Holder has made 28 stops this season and currently sports a .431 save percentage. Recio has helped her on the defensive end, leading the way with nine caused turnovers and 13 ground balls.

Staying on the road for one more contest, Christopher Newport will wrap up its four-game excursion with a neutral site bout against Adrian in Hilton Head, South Carolina on Saturday. Game time is slated for 10:30 a.m.
