No. 19 CNU Women's Lacrosse Hits the Road for a Pair of USA South Contests This Weekend

FERRUM, Va. -- Rolling along through the early part of the 2013 campaign, the No. 19 Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will look to continue its six-game winning streak when the Captains hit the road for a Saturday showdown against Ferrum at 2 p.m. and a 1 p.m. Sunday tilt at Greensboro.

Off to a great start this season, CNU enters the weekend with a 6-1 record. Ferrum is also 6-2 overall, while Greensboro is 1-7. All three teams are currently sitting atop the USA South standings with the Panthers at 2-0 and both the Captains and Pride at 1-0.

Against Ferrum and Greensboro, Christopher Newport has had a string of success dating back to the squad's inaugural season in 2001. Since then, CNU has a 17-1 all-time mark against the Panthers and a 14-6 record against the Pride. Overall, the Captains have won 36 straight USA South regular season contests over the past seven seasons. Greensboro was the last team to defeat CNU, accomplishing the feat on April 1, 2006.

Dominant on the offensive end throughout the 2013 season, Ashton Marshall currently leads the USA South and ranks among the top-five nationally with 31 goals. Elena Obregon has also had a breakout freshman campaign, ranking second on the team with 15 goals. Lauren King also leads the team with 12 assists and sits second with 19 draw controls.

The CNU defense has been anchored by freshman Hanna Slough, who boasts a .511 save percentage and a 7.76 goals-against-average. Emily Johnson also has been impressive on the defensive end, forcing a team-high 12 turnovers. Kelly Lane has caused eight as well.

Registering only the team's second loss of the year in its last outing, Ferrum previously had a six-game winning streak before falling to Drew on Wednesday. The Panthers are led by Sydney Hewartson, who sits atop the conference with 53 points and 29 assists. Arielle Boyd also has a team-high 15 caused turnovers, while Amanda Cheney has a .467 save percentage.

In the Pride's last outing, Greensboro picked up its first win of the season with a 20-8 victory over N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday. Brittany Ziobro has been at the forefront of the GC attack, collecting 22 goals and seven assists. Kayla Gonzalez also leads the team with 17 ground balls, and goalie Kaleigh Hemstock has made 65 saves during her time between the pipes.

Playing four straight in Newport News after this weekend, CNU will kick off its home stand against Methodist on March 23. That game will also be the second annual Debbie Cale Classic, which is held to promote education and raise awareness and funds for the fight against ovarian cancer.
