NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior Robbie Wagner picked up a crucial doubles win with teammate Will Sloan, and then posted the match-clinching singles victory to help lead Christopher Newport over Washington College in men's tennis action, 5-4. CNU evens their overall record to 4-4, while the Shoremen fall to 1-2 this season.

The Captains, ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), were taking on the 11th ranked team in the region, Washington College. CNU fell behind, 2-1, after doubles play, with the Wagner/Sloan tandem picking up the lone win for the Captains. In the one-point match, it would prove an imperative win for CNU at No. 3 doubles, defeating Joel Novick and Andy Pearson by a score of 8-5.

In singles play, the Captains quickly took a 3-2 lead in the match behind impressive victories at the top two positions. Rookie Chiraag Shetty dropped Visnu Rajes (6-1, 6-1) at No. 1 singles, and senior Kyle Tobin handled Marc Cywinski (6-0, 6-0).

Joona Rahko would set up the match-clinching victory by Wagner with a win at No. 6, defeating Pearson in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Wagner, playing at No. 4 singles. squared off against Ryan Holtschneider for the second time in 2012-13 after the two battled in the ITA Regional Championships this fall. In that match, Holtschneider would stretch Wagner to a third set tiebreak before falling to the CNU senior 4-6, 6-2, 11-9. This time around, Wagner made quick work of the Shoreman in dual action, 6-2, 6-1.

Christopher Newport will now head back on the road for three straight matches this weekend. The Captains take on Oglethorpe University and LaGrange College on Saturday, March 16, followed by a conference match against Piedmont College on Sunday, March 17.
