LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Looking to continue the squad's two-game roll, the No. 19 Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will head west for a 4 p.m. bout against Lynchburg at Shellenberger Field on Saturday afternoon.
Yet another non-conference showdown highlights CNU's early-season slate as the squad prepares for the opening of league play next week. Currently, the Captains boast a 2-1 record and have won their last two contests after downing No. 15 Mary Washington and St. Mary's. Lynchburg comes into play with a spotless record after knocking off Greensboro, 13-6, in the team's season-opener last Saturday.
Normally an evenly-matched series, CNU and Lynchburg have squared off 12 times with each team winning six of those meetings. Christopher Newport won the previous bout after securing a 19-13 victory last season at Captains Turf Field. CNU has also won the previous three contests at Lynchburg, including a 14-11 win in 2011.

Headlining Christopher Newport's efforts so far this season, junior
Ashton Marshall currently leads the team with 15 goals and 17 points. She has scored at least three times in every game in 2013, including a seven-goal outburst against No. 13 Mary Washington and a five-goal surge on Wednesday at St. Mary's. She has also collected nine ground balls, which ranks second on the team.
The Captains have also received five goals apiece from
Jessica Singer and
Elena Obregon, while
Lauren King leads the way with five assists.
Kylie Chaplin and
Becca Geist have each tallied three points as well.
Hanna Slough has been outstanding in goal for the Captains, earning the USA South Defensive Player of the Week award for her efforts against Washington & Lee. So far this season, she has 25 saves in over 160 minutes between the pipes. The first-year standout has also held the opposition to just 8.61 goals-per-game.
Emily Johnson has also excelled on the defensive end, leading the team with nine caused turnovers and 14 ground balls. Obregon and Geist have also forced four turnovers apiece, while
Kelly Lane has three to go along with seven ground balls and three draw controls.
Buoyed by a victory in their season opener, the Hornets come into the game with some momentum as well. In Lynchburg's victory over Greensboro, freshman Katherine Francis made a spectacular debut, scoring four times while adding an assist to pace the LC attack.
Upperclassmen Kendall Adkin and Julie Will also looked strong against the Pride as both seniors scored three times and chipped in with an assist. Junior Caroline Kilby rounded out the multi-goal scorers after driving home a pair against Greensboro.
Really adept in all phases of the game, Francis also led the team with 12 draw controls and three caused turnovers. Hailey Bossert picked up the victory and helped anchor Lynchburg's defensive efforts after posting three saves in nearly 52 minutes of action.
Going forward, Christopher Newport will continue its road trip with a southern swing through Georgia and South Carolina. CNU will open up USA South play with a game against Agnes Scott on March 6 at 4 p.m. before battling Adrian College in a neutral-site match-up in Hilton Head, South Carolina on March 8 at 10:30 a.m.
