NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Freshman
Chiraag Shetty burst onto the collegiate scene on Friday, posting his first ever dual victory against a Division I foe. Shetty won at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-3), but was the lone highlight for the Captains who suffered a 6-1 loss to the Norfolk State Spartans (1-3).
Shetty, who was 2-2 in one tournament this fall, opened up his CNU career with a win over Igor Braga in straight sets. The Captains season opener came at home, as Shetty picked up the win at Centre Court in Newport News. He also played with senior
Kyle Tobin at No. 1 doubles, falling to Braga and Robin Riethmueller (8-5). Tobin picked up a pair of wins in each set, but ultimately fell at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-2).
CNU also got a strong doubles performance from juniors
Joey Manilla and
Lloyd Luck; the two were tied, 6-6, when the match was called due to Norfolk State winning the doubles point. Manilla added a 6-1, 6-3 loss at No. 3 singles, as the only other Captain to win at least three games in a set on Friday.
The Captains will be back in action in a little over a week as they travel to face Division I George Mason University next Saturday, Feb. 16, at 5:00 pm.
