NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- It's going to be a busy night in the Freeman Center Wednesday, as Christopher Newport hosts a doubleheader starting at 5:30 pm. The 22nd-ranked CNU women's basketball team will take on Mary Baldwin College in the Annual Play 4Kay Game in support of breast cancer awareness; they will be immediately followed by Coach
John Krikorian's men's basketball team taking on N.C. Wesleyan on Senior Night.
The CNU women have posted a 21-2 overall record with a 14-2 mark against conference opponents. With just two games remaining on the schedule, the Captains will look to finish out the regular season on a big run. Currently, CNU is riding an eight-game winning streak and will face a Mary Baldwin squad looking for its first win of the year (0-23, 0-16).
The Annual Play 4Kay game is played in honor of long-time N.C. State head coach Kay Yow. It is an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Play 4Kay initiative has raised over $2 million to support women's cancer research. Wednesday, donations will be accepted in honor of the cause, and autographed pink basketballs will be raffled off.
On the men's side, CNU will look to end a three-game slide in its final home regular season game of the year. The team will take on an N.C. Wesleyan squad that nipped the Captains, 112-109, in double overtime earlier this year. Before the game, CNU will honor a group of four seniors that will be playing in their final home game:
Will Clarkson,
Paul Meredith,
Jon Snead and
Zach Youngman.
Fans will also watch on as over 200 student-athletes will be recognized as part of a special Academic Recognition ceremony. The group is so large it will be split between both games, with half being honored during halftime of the women's game and the remainder during the men's.
Finally, CNU students will be present as the Department of Athletics raffles off the final ticket for the "Tuition Toss" and will award the shot to one lucky winner.
Both games will be presented in a live video webcast at CNUsports.com/LIVE, and live statistics will be available at CNUsports.com. The men's game will be broadcast live on the CNU/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM).
