BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Christopher Newport men's basketball team used a 29-10 run over the final ten minutes to turn a seven point lead into an 80-54 victory over Southern Virginia. The win improves the Captains to 5-1 overall and is the eighth in a row over the Knights, a future Capital Athletic Conference member.
The Captains opened the game streaking from the field, hitting eight of their first 13 shots and building a 19-6 lead seven minutes into the game. Junior guard,
Mike Cherry paced the scoring shooting a blistering four of five from the field, including a pair of three point baskets while staking the CNU to their early lead.
The hosts adjusted to the aggressive defense from CNU and were able to mount an 8-2 run off of five Captains missed shots in a three minute stretch. Wesley Evans hit three free throws after being fouled by
Kevin Regimbal to bring the score to 26-17.
The Captains bench came to life at the end of the half as
Luc Atangana converted a three-point play and sophomore guard,
Terry Jackson made a pair of layups to send CNU to the locker room with a 36-24 advantage.
The Knights matched the Captains for the first 9 minutes of the second half largely due to the play of junior guards Preston Eaton and Chris Baker. The two accounted for 27 of the 30 points SVU scored in the second half. Eaton's slashing layup with 10:51 to play trimmed the CNU to seven.
The final eleven minutes belonged to the Captains.
"I thought we brought a lot of energy and played 40 minutes with great intensity," said Head Coach,
John Krikorian, "we are forming our identity with great toughness and intensity."
Senior,
Tra Benefield hit three consecutive three pointers in less than a minute to give the Captains a 19 point lead. CNU maintained control of the game for the final nine minutes.
Benfield added 10 rebounds to go with his 18 points, his second straight double-double. Junior,
Mike Cherry added 16 points, largely due to his 4-10 shooting from beyond the arc while sophomore,
Terry Jackson, led a tremendous day from the CNU bench registering a career high 13 points and four assists.
The Captains continue their four game road swing with a trip to York (Pa.) on Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest. The game will be CNU's first Capital Athletic Conference game and will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi radio network and will be simulcast at CNUsports.com/LIVE.
