Captains Host No. 4 Salisbury in CAC Tournament Semifinals Wednesday Night

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After locking up its first ever Capital Athletic Conference regular season championship, the Christopher Newport University women's soccer team will begin its quest in the CAC Tournament on Wednesday as they host fourth-seeded Salisbury University (10-5-4) at 7:00 pm.  The Captains (13-3-1) will look to advance in their first ever postseason tournament under first-year head coach Dan Weiler.

Links to live stats and live video will be available at CNUsports.com, beginning at kickoff. Earlier this season, the Captains held off Salisbury at home, 2-0, despite being outshot in the game. Christopher Newport holds a small 8-5-1 advantage in the all-time series, including this season's victory in CAC play.

The Captains were 7-1 in league play this year, led primarily by one of the top scoring tandems in the region. Seniors Bupe Okeowo and Emma O'Reilly have combined for 52 total points, scoring 22 of CNU's 37 goals this season. Okeowo is tied for third in the league for scoring, with 28 total points, and has been red hot with at least one point in each of the last seven games. She has scored six straight goals for the Captains, dating back through the last four games. O'Reilly, the Captains' all-time leading scorer, eclipsed the 100-point plateau in her career earlier this season and has added 10 goals and four assists for 24 points so far.

Junior Joy Piirto leads the team in assists with six, while newcomers Lindsay Mondloch and Victoria Perry have each added five helpers this year.

CNU also boasts a strong defense, led by rookie netminder Haley Casanova. The true freshman has been impressive in her debut, playing all but 45 minutes this season and leading CNU through 10 shutouts. Her goals against average is down to 0.65 for the season while her save percentage is amongst the best in the league, at 86.9%. Playing in front of her, senior Alexis Stahlman, junior Kelsey Thomas, sophomore Abby Johnson and rookie Sam Rabinek have held opponents to just 10.4 shots per game.

Salisbury comes into Wednesday's contest following a draw in the opening round, advancing on penalty kicks. The Sea Gulls are unbeaten in their last five games since suffering the loss at Christopher Newport, going 3-0-2 in that span. While the offense has been good, with four players in double figures, it has been a strong defense that has led the way for Salisbury in 2013. Reigning CAC Defensive Player of the Week, Michelle Conrad, is the last line, with just nine goals allowed and 60 saves made. Her 0.75 goals against average has helped the Sea Gulls stay in games all season long.

CNU and Salisbury will kickoff at Captains Field on Wednesday night, with live stats and video available at CNUsports.com.
