BUENA VISTA, Va. -- It took just 31 seconds for CNU to get on the board today, as senior
Caleb Lewis found leading scorer
Jalon Brown in the middle of the box for the eventual game-winning goal in a 6-0 rout over Southern Virginia University. The Captains improved to 7-4-1 overall, while the Knights fell to 0-11-1 in the mid-week contest.
While both CNU and Southern Virginia are members of the Capital Athletic Conference, the game will not count toward the league standings in 2013, as the Knights are still under an NCAA provisional period because of its transition to Division III.
The win gets Christopher Newport back on track after a pair of heartbreaking losses in their last two matchups, including a 2-1 double overtime setback to nationally-ranked conference rival York College (Pa.). CNU has now won six of their last eight contests, and are unbeaten in seven of their last nine.
The first goal came just 31 seconds into the match, earning the distinction of the fastest score for the Captains since the 2007 season when Michael Caro connected just 15 seconds into a match versus Salisbury. Brown had a stellar night, factoring into all three first-half goals.
Brown scored his second goal of the game, ninth on the season, just over five minutes later. Lewis again assisted on the tally, playing a perfect cross to the top of the box for Brown, who uncorked a blast by the keeper for his second goal. Brown would then assist on the third goal of the game, in the 14th minute, pushing CNU's lead to 3-0. On a corner kick, rookie
Jimmy Grace headed home the score for his second career goal on the assist by CNU's leading scorer.
The Captians offense was unrelenting throughout the game, powering 32 shots toward the Southern Virginia net and putting 20 shots on-goal. Goalkeeper Scott Zaring made 14 saves in net for the Knights, and allowed three goals in each half. The Captains also held a 16-5 advantage in corner kicks and a 32-3 edge in shots overall.
In the second half, CNU got another header goal from Grace, putting home a deflection for his third career goal, and sophomore
Ryan Balfour also knocked in a pair of scores. Balfour's first goal came in the 61st minute when he got by his defender at the top of the box and hurried a shot by Zaring, and then again in the 67th minute, when rookie
Sammy Blosser set up Balfour's seventh goal of the season with a pass from left of the box.
CNU split duties in goal during the game, as senior
Sean Killion did not face any shots in the first half, while sophomore
Nolan Mann took three attempts and stopped a pair in the second half. The two combined for the clean sheet, CNU's fifth shutout of the season.
Fifteen different players registered a shot in the game for the Captains, and only two players did not put at least one of their attempts on frame. Balfour, Grace and Brown each scored twice to lead the attack, combining for seven of the 32 shots in the game.
The Captains will now return home for a key Capital Athletic Conference matchup this Saturday, October 12 as they host Frostburg State (9-2-0, 3-1-0), tentatively set for a 3:00 pm kickoff. The game is part of a doubleheader with the women's team, who will kick off promptly at 1:00 pm. Live stats will be available for both contests at CNUsports.com.
