NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport football team travels to Georgia this week to take on LaGrange College. Game time Saturday night is set for 6:00 p.m. at Callaway Stadium in LaGrange.
It will be the first-ever trip to Georgia for CNU, and the Captains will be playing a squad with a new head coach. Thursday afternoon LaGrange announced that Todd Mooney has stepped down after nearly eight years guiding the program since its inception. He has been replaced by the school's offensive coordinator, Matt Mumme.
CNU will facing a team with a potent offense. Under Mumme's leadership, the Panthers are leading the USA South Conference and NCAA Division III in several offensive categories, and junior quarterback Graham Craig, a transfer from Division II Valdosta State, has broken numerous school and conference records. Craig has passed for 2,756 yards and 28 touchdowns, both new school season bests. The Panthers are averaging more than 395 yards passing per game.
"This is basically a four-day road trip," Head Coach
Matt Kelchner said. "It's a long way to go, but we'll be ready. Every game is a big game from here on out."
The Captains are 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the USA South Athletic Conference. CNU is coming off a 42-13 win at Greensboro last Saturday, the highest offensive outburst of the season for Kelchner's squad.
"I think we really returned to our early-season form last week," Kelchner continued. "Our offense found a good rhythm and put up some points. We will need to continue doing that."
CNU's offense this week takes on a defense that is allowing over 500 yards per game. LaGrange is 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the USA South. The Panthers are scoring a lot of points, 38.1 per game, but also allowing 37.7 points per game. Defensive coordinator Terry Ursin also stepped down on Thursday at LaGrange.
The Panthers lost last week at Methodist, 43-41, and have given up 40 or more points in their last three games.
Christopher Newport will be looking to avenge a 20-6 loss last year to the Panthers at POMOCO Stadium. It was the first-ever meeting with LaGrange.
Kickoff time is set for 6:00 p.m. Saturday night at Callaway Stadium in LaGrange. All CNU games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM). The pre-game show will begin at 5:30 p.m.
