ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- In the last game of the regular season, senior
Bupe Okeowo extended her scoring streak but the Captains saw their win streak snapped at eight games when St. Mary's College (Md.) stole a 2-1 double overtime victory. Christopher Newport, who already clinched the CAC Regular Season Title, fall to 13-3-1 overall with a 7-1-0 mark in league play.
The Seahawks (7-8-3, 6-2-0) await the finish of the CAC regular season to find out their seeding for next week's conference tournament. St. Mary's has a chance at the number two seed depending on the finish of the York (Pa.) versus Penn State Harrisburg matchup Wednesday. CNU will be the top seed and has earned a first round bye, hosting a semifinal matchup next Wednesday, November 6 at 7:00 pm.Â
On Tuesday, the Seahawks took a first-half lead when Yvonne Latour knocked home her fifth goal of the season on an assist by Jess Konecke. Konecke took a shot that was saved, but Latour got to the rebound and put away a shot into the right side for the 1-0 lead.Â
The Captains offense kicked into gear, outshooting the home team 18-7 in regulation. Kelsey Wirtz was up to the task in goal for St. Mary's, stopping four shots on-goal against the Captains. With less than ten minutes to go, though, CNU turned to their red hot senior forward to even the score.Â
Okeowo, who had scored 19 points in the Captains eight-game winning streak, put away the equalizer in the 81st minute of action. Rookie
Victoria Perry played a cross into the box where Okeowo one-timed in a volley for her 12th goal of the season. She has scored six straight goals for CNU, and has factored into the last seven, leading the team with 28 total points.
With the game knotted at one, the two teams had an even opening overtime period, with neither squad getting off a shot on-goal. In the second, CNU continued to pressure Wirtz, taking three shots including a header by
Lindsay Mondloch that was just high. In the 107th minute, though, Lexy McCarty scored the game-winning goal off an assist by Latour.
It was just the third setback of the season for CNU and first loss in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Captains outshot the Seahawks, 23-9, including a 6-5 edge in shots on-goal and an 8-0 lead in corner kicks. Junior midfielder
Joy Piirto led the team with three shots on-goal, while Okeowo put two of her team-high seven shots on-frame.Â
The Captains will now focus their attention on the postseason as they await their opponent for the CAC Semifinals next Wednesday. Seedings will be announced Wednesday evening.Â
