GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Christopher Newport University football team trailed Greensboro College Saturday night with less than a minute to play in the first half, 13-7. The CNU offense then erupted, scoring a touchdown before halftime to take the lead, 14-13, at the break...and then added four second half touchdowns to cruise to a 42-13 triumph.
The road win at Jamieson Stadium improved the Captains to 5-2 on the season, and 2-2 in the USA South Athletic Conference. It was the 13th straight victory for CNU over the Pride without a loss. Greensboro is now 0-4 at home this season.
"This is just what the doctor ordered," Head Coach
Matt Kelchner said. "We got the offense going and really returned to where we were back in the first three weeks of the season."
After a scoreless opening quarter, the Captains got on the board on the first play of the second quarter to grab a 7-0 lead. Greensboro then scored on pass plays of 53 and 18 yards to take a 13-7 lead with just 1:10 to go in the first half.
Christopher Newport snatched the lead back with just 39 seconds left before halftime on a 13-yard run by junior quarterback
Marcus Morrast. The scamper capped a four-play, 73-yard drive that took only 25 seconds thanks mostly to a 60-yard pass from Morrast to junior
Rudy Rudolph.
The Captains then dominated the second half, offensively and defensively, to pull away. CNU's defense allowed just 80 total yards in the second half as the offense recorded four more touchdowns.
"We really mixed it up well, we were able to play a lot of people," Kelchner continued. "It was good for our offense to break out like that, and our defense has been pretty steady all along."
The 42 points scored by the Captains are the most scored by CNU in any game this season, and the highest point total since they scored 45 in a road win at Maryville last year on September 29, 2012.
CNU freshman running back
Daquan Davis opened and closed the scoring for the Captains, reaching the end zone on runs of 23 yards in the second quarter and 19 yards in the fourth quarter. Davis finished the game with 82 yards rushing on 12 carries. Sophomore
Paul Dukes ran the ball 17 times for 93 yards.
Junior quarterback
Marcus Morrast rushed for two scores and also connected with junior
Rudy Rudolph on a 57-yard scoring pass. Morrast finished the night with 56 yards rushing and 201 passing yards, completing 11 of 19 throws.
"It was a really good night for Marcus," Kelchner said. "He saw more time in practice this week and it showed out there. I think he did some really good things and managed the game well."
The Captains out-gained the Pride, 483-259, in total yards, and held Greensboro to just 10 rushing yards on 15 carries for the night.
Greensboro falls to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the USA South with the loss.
Christopher Newport travels to LaGrange, Georgia, next Saturday to take on the Panthers of LaGrange College. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
