NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport University football squad has a tall order for the final month of the regular season. The Captains, 4-2 overall but just 1-2 in the USA South, play three of their final four on the road, and each game is critical for any hope of post-season play.
"There are a lot of games left and plenty to play for," Head Coach
Matt Kelchner said this week. "A whole lot can happen in a month of the season, we've seen it here over the last few weeks. We have to get back on track and play hard each and every week."
CNU travels to Greensboro College Saturday night for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against the Pride at Jamieson Stadium, where they are 0-3 this year. GC is 2-5 overall and 1-3 in league action.
"They are a good football team," Kelchner continued. "They have put up some big numbers this season and they've been close in just about every game. It's their Homecoming game, so you know they will be fired up."
The Captains have never lost to the Pride, holding a 12-0 lead in the all-time series. The last two games have been tight battles, with the Captains winning by five points two years ago in Greensboro, 27-22, and six points last year at POMOCO Stadium, 22-16.
CNU is coming off a 30-17 home loss to Maryville last Saturday night. Greensboro won in Rocky Mount last Saturday over North Carolina Wesleyan, 44-42, snapping a three-game losing skid.
The Pride has been involved in some high-scoring contests this year, and Bill Young's squad is averaging 28.7 points per game. The problem for the Pride has been the defense, a unit that is yielding 35.1 points per game.
Christopher Newport's offense has sputtered, but sophomore running back
Paul Dukes has posted solid numbers. Dukes, who was the USA South Offensive Rookie of the Year last season, is now averaging 103.5 yards per game. He has gone over the 100-yard mark three times this year, including the last two weeks.
All CNU games are broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM). The pre-game show will begin at 6:30 p.m.
