CNU Men's Soccer Cruises to 5-0 Win at Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Behind a career-best performance from senior forward Jack Cooper, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team breezed past Marymount University (4-12-0, 0-6-0) in Capital Athletic Conference action, 5-0.  Cooper scored twice, including the gamewinner, and added an assist for a career-high five point performance. 

The Captains dominated the game offensively, holding a significant 24-5 edge in total shots.  CNU scored twice in the opening stanza, with both goals coming from Cooper. CNU's leading scorer, Jalon Brown, set up both scoring strikes. The first came in the 31st minute, followed by another goal in the 38th minute.

CNU took 13 shots in the first half, putting seven of them on-frame. After halftime, the offense would not let up, tacking on three more goals. Brown picked up his third assist of the game in the 61st minute, setting up Ryan Balfour for his ninth goal this season. An unassisted tally by sophomore Garrett Van Nutt made it 4-0 in the 84th minute, and Balfour added an insurance goal on Cooper's assist in the 86th. 

In goal, senior Sean Killion played the majority of the game, turning away the only three shots he faced as he led CNU to the team's seventh shutout of the season. Sophomore Nolan Mann played the final 15 minutes to preserve the clean sheet.

Brown's three-assist performance sets a career-high in the category, giving him eight helpers on the season. He raised his league-leading scoring total to 28 points, and moved into the top ten all-time in scoring at Christopher Newport. With 78 career points, he tied Shadi Abi-Saab for tenth all-time. He also moved into a tie for seventh all-time in career assists, with 22. 

Cooper's five-point performance was the second best mark for a CNU player this season. It came on four shots, with three on-goal. He led the attack while senior Caleb Lewis and Brown each added four shots. Balfour scored on both of his attempts Saturday.

The Captains ran their win streak to four, improving to 10-4-1 on the season. CNU will return home this week, hosting a key matchup against 16th-ranked Salisbury University (13-2-0, 5-0-0) on Wednesday, with kickoff set for 7:00 pm. The Sea Gulls are coming off a huge win over second-ranked York (Pa.) on Saturday.
