BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Hoping to continue the squad's 14-game roll, the 10th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team will put its winning streak on the line Sunday at 2 p.m. when the Captains head to Bridgewater for a non-conference tilt at the Jopson Athletic Complex.
After Wednesday's thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 7 Salisbury, CNU sits at 14-0 on the season, including 6-0 away from Newport News. Bridgewater has also pieced together an outstanding campaign, compiling a 10-3 record and a pristine 4-0 mark at home.
Perennial foes, Christopher Newport and Bridgewater have faced off 11 times with the Captains holding a 10-1 record in those contests. Last season, CNU picked up its 10th straight victory in the series with a 4-0 win at Captains Turf Field on October 7.
Providing fans with a multitude of ways to follow along with the action, Bridgewater's website will feature live stats and a web stream of Sunday's contest. Fans can access those features by visiting BridgewaterEagles.com or clicking on the direct links on CNU's schedule page.
Yielding less than one goal per game this season, the Captains enter the weekend boasting one of the nation's stingiest defensive units. CNU has allowed only 11 goals all season and limited the opposition to just over eight shots per contest. Overall, the team has seven shutouts, which is tied for the most by the program since 2008.
Bailey Lien has been the headliner so far, ranking among the NCAA leaders with a 0.63 goals-against-average and an .857 save percentage. She has also been aided by an incredible collection of back line stalwarts, including
Chelsea Hines and
Jordan Snider, who both have five defensive saves.
Shelby Judkins, a former CAC Defensive Player of the Week, also has a pair of stops to go along with eight points on the offensive end.
Dynamic on the attack,
Lauren Cheatham leads Christopher Newport with 12 goals and 29 points.
Belle Tunstall has also been a force for the Captains, chipping in with 10 goals and a team-high nine assists. Against Salisbury, she continued her outstanding junior campaign with another excellent outing after posting a goal and an assist.
Along with the leading scorers,
Kelsey Clark has found the back of the cage nine times, while
Taylor Young,
Marlene Lichty, and
Allie Hackbarth all have at least 10 points. Lichty has been especially potent in big games, coming through with game-winning goals against No. 18 Catholic and No. 7 Salisbury.
Years removed from the program's last victory over CNU, Bridgewater will look to snap its skid against the Captains while extending its current five-game winning streak. The Eagles have been especially sharp lately, allowing just one goal in four of their last five contests.
Caroline Augsburger has been one of Bridgewater's top offensive threats while compiling a team-high six assists to go along with five goals. Colleen Dickson and Rachel Loy have also scored five times apiece, while Taylor Prillaman leads the team with eight goals.
Making waves on the defensive end, Jessica Balsano has started all 13 games while posting a 1.42 goals-against-average and a .780 save percentage. She has also come through with a pair of shutouts during the year.
