FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore
Mark Brewington scored his first goal of the season and senior goalkeeper
Sean Killion had a strong performance in goal, leading Christopher Newport (9-4-1, 3-1-0) to a 1-0 victory on the road Wednesday, defeating Mary Washington (8-6-0, 2-3-0).
The Captains would score the lone goal of the contest in the 28th minute of action on Brewington's second career tally. The sophomore checked in during the 20th minute and would make the most out of his first opportunity just under nine minutes later. Senior
Caleb Lewis sent a perfect ball into the box, where Brewington leaped and got a header on frame for the score.Â
The assist was the 19th in Lewis' career, moving him into the top ten all-time at CNU. He tied Charlie Sneddon and Donovan Gutzmore for ninth on the all-time list.
With a goal in hand, the defenses took over for both teams. The Eagles offense would pressure CNU for the remainder of the half, putting a pair of shots on-goal, but Killion turned away both attempts. Jacob Burke and Andres Garcia had the shots for UMW.Â
Early in the second half, the home team would continue the pressure, earning a pair of early corner kicks, threatening the CNU defense. Again the Captains were up to the task, though, as Killion stopped an attempt by David Heller in the 71st minute.Â
The Captains took just four shots on-goal in the game as the Eagles defense smothered the CNU attack. Three other players joined Brewington with a shot on-goal, with Lewis,
Connor Brittan and
Jack Cooper each posting one.Â
Mary Washington's goalkeeper Ian Waltz made three saves while the Eagles offense had six shots on-goal. Killion made all six saves to earn the shutout, his fifth of the season.Â
CNU will return to action this Saturday when they travel to take on Marymount University in Arlington, Va. Kick off is set for 4:00 pm.
