CNU Volleyball Looks to Continue Its Four-Match Roll on Tuesday Against Wesley

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport volleyball team will look to extend its season-best four-match winning streak on Tuesday when the Captains host Wesley at 6 p.m. in a Capital Athletic Conference bout at the Freeman Center.

Entering the contest on a roll, CNU has swept its last four opponents and sits at 15-11 overall, including 2-0 in league action. Wesley is 15-7 this season with a 1-2 record against conference foes. Tuesday's match-up will mark the first battle between the two teams in program history.

Nailing down a perfect week, including a pair of victories during a tri-match on Saturday, the Captains were bolstered by several top-notch efforts from their freshmen. Evelyn Harper notched three straight double-digit dig efforts last week, while Paxton Crooks had her third double-double of the season with 13 digs and 11 assists against Virginia Wesleyan on Friday.

Not to be overlooked, fellow first-year standout Briana Sutton ripped off a string of four-straight double-digit kill performances before hammering home 11 more blasts during Saturday's doubleheader. Overall this season, she leads the team with 176 kills and sits second with a .251 hitting percentage.

Equally adept on the offensive end, Abby McIntyre sits second on the squad with 171 kills and leads the way with 30 aces. Fellow veteran Chastity Lacy has been dangerous along the net as well, roping 164 kills in addition to a team-high 91 blocks. The reigning All-American has also slung 26 aces for the Captains.

Sophomore setter Rachel Conway has been stellar as well, leading the team with 479 assists while contributing 63 kills and 60 blocks. Last week, she was especially potent, matching her career-high with four aces against Southern Virginia and William Peace while also tallying 10 kills on just 12 attempts during Saturday's twin bill.

Sliding a bit lately, Wesley enters Tuesday on a three-match skid after securing eight straight victories last month. The Wolverines' previous four contests came against conference foes with the team falling to Southern Virginia, York, and Marymount after upending Penn State Harrisburg, 3-1, on October 2.

Especially well-balanced on the offensive end, Wesley has three players with at least 150 kills this season. Arnelle Akakpo leads the team with 170, while Sharis Allen and Lindsay Dimuzio each have 164. Ashley Klein has been the chief facilitator, averaging 6.59 assists-per-set, while Meghan Marshall has paced the defense with 393 digs.

Eventually, Christopher Newport will head back out on the road later in the week as the Captains kick off a two-match CAC swing on Friday at 6 p.m. against Penn State Harrisburg.
