NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After trading goals early in the first half, it wasn't until the 80th minute when senior
Emma O'Reilly would score the game-winning goal against Frostburg State (5-7-1, 2-2-1), in Capital Athletic Conference action, 2-1. The Captains improved to 9-2-1 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in league play on the late winner from their all-time leading scorer.
Playing on a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon, the Captains and Bobcats took to Captains Turf Field for their first game as conference opponents. It was just 3:10 into the contest when Courtney Mack put the visiting team on top after a long breakaway. Mack split a pair of defenders at midfield and sprinted 40 yards for a one-on-one with CNU keeper
Haley Casanova. Mack chipped the keeper into the left side of the goal for an early lead.Â
The lead was short-lived, however, as CNU answered almost immediately. Just 34 seconds later, junior midfielder
Joy Piirto played a long pass down the right side to the goal line. Sprinting to the spot was freshman
Victoria Perry, who slid and connected before the ball crossed out of bounds and played a perfect cross into the center of the box, where senior
Carly Utterback was ready and waiting. Utterback collected the pass and scored on the open goal back post.Â
The two teams settled in the rest of the way, with both goalkeepers stepping up in big chances. CNU outshot the Bobcats, 12-3, in the first half, but Casanova had to stop a pair, including a sensational diving save on another breakaway.Â
With the game tied at one, the rain continued to fall in the second half. After holding off an initial surge by FSU, the Captains were the aggressor in the latter stages. That would be when O'Reilly cashed in on her fifth gamewinner of the year. Casanova would pick up her first career assist as she played a booming punt into the Frostburg State zone. Senior
Bupe Okeowo used every inch of her 5-10 frame to head the ball over the defense on the first bounce, where O'Reilly was crashing into the box. She laced a hard shot with her left foot on her first touch, into the top of the goal.Â
CNU finished the game with a 22-9 advantage in shots, and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. The Captains put 14 shots on-goal while the Bobcats managed six. Katie Smith made 11 saves in goal for the Bobcats, and the defense made one key stop on the goal line in front of Smith. Casanova finished with five saves, picking up the ninth win in her young career.Â
CNU is back in action at home twice this week, finishing up the regular season home schedule against Salisbury on Wednesday, October 16 at 6:00 pm, and versus York College (Pa.) on Saturday, October 19 at 2:00 pm.
