NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- CNU trailed 1-0 heading into the second half, but led by the passing of
Sebastian Abrigo, the Captains scored five second-half goals to blow past Frostburg State (9-3-0, 3-2-0), 5-1. Abrigo had a career-high three assists, while junior
Jalon Brown netted his fifth game-winning goal of the year. Christopher Newport improved to 8-4-1 overall, with a 2-1-0 mark in CAC play.
Playing on Captains Turf Field for the first time this season due to accumulated rainfall this week, the Captains and Bobcats played in light rain throughout the contest. Frostburg State came into the contest winners in nine of their first 11 games and pushed the tempo early against the home Captains.
The defense would hold until the 18th minute, when the Bobcats scored on a corner kick. After the original ball was corraled by the CNU defense, Chris Herbert played through contact and stole the ball. He then shot through traffic from about ten yards out and got the Bobcats on the board.
Unable to get on the board in the first half, CNU came out of the break with intensity, and got the equalizer quickly. Just under a minute and a half into the second stanza, CNU would even the score off the foot of sophomore
Ryan Balfour. On a nice pass from
Jalon Brown, Balfour turned against his defender and let the ball roll toward the left side of the box. Balfour cleared space from his defender and smacked a low shot with his left foot into the right side.
Brown would then startle the Bobcats defense in the 54th minute, getting the eventual gamewinner off a pass from defender
Charlie Dodge. The rookie defender played a long pass to switch fields to the left side. The ball bounced over the defense and it was Brown who got their first, unleashing a laser with his left foot into the right corner of the goal.
After a Frostburg player picked up his second yellow card, the Captains scored three more goals with a man advantage. In the 78th minute, Abrigo picked up the first of his three assists on a set piece from the left side. He played a perfect pass into box, where senior
Jack Cooper volleyed a shot in past the keeper on the back post. Then, a minute later, he set up senior
Caleb Lewis again from the left side. Lewis found a seam between the defense and slammed a shot off the right post and in.
Finally, rookie
Keith Phelps scored on a good run down the left side. Senior goalkeeper
Sean Killion started the play on a goal kick, and Abrigo flicked the ball onsides with a header. Phelps then took a hard shot that glanced off the right post for the score.
CNU will return to action this week, as they hit the road to play Mary Washington on October 16 at 4:00 pm.
