CNU Men's Soccer Closes Out Non-Conference Slate Against Familiar Foe; Kickoff Set for 7pm Wednesday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Captains men's soccer team will look to run its win streak to six on Wednesday, as they play host to a familiar foe from the USA South Athletic Conference. Christopher Newport (6-2-1) will take on the Greensboro Pride (4-4-2) at 7:00 pm on Wednesday night, hosting their former conference rivals at Captains Field.

The game will feature one of the longest standing rivalries in CNU soccer history, as the two teams have battled 45 times since 1974. It is also one of the most even matchups at CNU, as the Pride holds the slightest of leads, 21-20-4, all-time.

Led by two-time reigning Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week Jalon Brown, the Captains offense has been firing on all cylinders in their current five-game winning streak. CNU is outscoring opponents 13-2 in the spurt, led by Brown's league-leading seven goals and 18 points. Sophomore Ryan Balfour has added three goals and two assists, while junior defender Tommy O'Neal has chipped in three goals of his own to help lead the attack. 

Defensively, CNU's senior goalkeeper Sean Killion has gone 5-0-0 this season, boasting a 0.49 goals against average and four shutouts. The back line, led recently by O'Neal, Sean Christein, Charlie Dodge and Jake Domenic, has really started to meld, holding opponents to just 7.6 shots per game during the win streak. 

Greensboro College is coming off a double overtime loss to N.C. Wesleyan College, who the Captains blanked, 3-0, earlier this season. Going 3-2 in their last five games, the Pride has had some success against the CAC, with wins over Southern Virginia (4-1) and St. Mary's of Maryland (5-0). 

Leading the charge in 2013 has been a stout defense that has given up just nine goals in ten games of action. Senior Manbi Nyepon has started eight games between the pipes, with a 0.98 goals against average, while sophomore Logan Rohde is adding a 0.37 GAA in two starts this season. 

The young offense has been led by a pair of rookies: freshman George Dimopoulos, with a pair of goals and two assists on the year, and first-year Shaun Watt, with three scores in just six games played.
