VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Christopher Newport overcame an early injury to starting goalkeeper Sean Killion and cruised to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan (1-2-1) in the Marlins Classic tonight. Senior Andrew Bonorden had a goal and an assist to lead the way for the Captains, who improve to 2-1-1 on the season.

Just 50 seconds into the match, CNU suffered a blow to the defensive unit when Killion suffered a cut that would send him off the pitch. Freshman Nolan Mann got the call for his first collegiate appearance and he stepped in admirably.  Mann played nearly the full 90 minutes allowing just one goal and making three stops.

The Captains offense made sure to back up the rookie in goal, scoring once in the first half and adding two more in the second stanza. Junior midfielder Caleb Lewis got the Captains on the board first in the 17th minute off of Bonorden's helper. Tight in the goal box, Lewis put away the shot in the left corner.

Early in the second half, sophomore Jalon Brown would net the eventual gamewinner off an assist by senior Denny Arinello. It was less than five minutes into the second half when Arinello found Brown in the box, where he pounded the back of the net from 10 yards out.

Travis Walke cut the lead in half in the 73rd minute of action, but as the rain began to fall late in the game, Bonorden stepped up with the insurance goal. With less than seven minutes remaining, the senior forward blasted a hard shot from outside of the box on the left side into the goal.

CNU outshot the Marlins, 14-7, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on-frame. Mann picked up his first career victory with the effort in goal.

The Captains head into conference play next week as they travel to Greensboro College and Ferrum College for the USA South opening weekend.
