CNU Football Falls to 0-2 with 42-20 loss at Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Christopher Newport fell behind early Saturday and never recovered, falling 42-20 to Hampden-Sydney. The Captains are now 0-2 to start the 2012 football season.

The Tigers scored two touchdowns in the first eight minutes and never looked back, building a 35-0 lead by halftime. All 20 CNU points came in the final quarter after the Tigers had built a 42-0 lead.

"We have a lot of parts that are not working in this machine right now and I'm the mechanic," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said following the defeat. "Our coaching staff and this entire team have a lot of work to do this week to see where we are as a football team."

Hampden-Sydney, picked to win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference this season, improved to 2-0 with the win. The game at Everett Stadium in Hampden-Sydney was played in front of 7,606 fans on a 90 degreee day. A large contingent of Christopher Newport fans and the CNU marching band made the trip for the game.

HSC sophomore quarterback, Nash Nance, a transfer from the University of Tennessee, threw five touchdown passes and completed 25 of 31 throws for 339 yards. Sophomore Holton Walker caught six passes for 144 yards and two scores. Senior running back Evan King rushed for 82 yards and scored twice, once on a run and another on a reception.

CNU senior quarterback Christian Woelfel-Monsivais came into the game in the fourth quarter and threw two touchdown passes. He completed 11 of 16 attempts for 149 yards. Starting quarterback Aaron Edwards finished 6 of 15 for 92 yards and a score.

Christopher Newport senior tight end Chris Coiner caught six balls for 89 yards and a touchdown. Junior Kentel Noel and freshman Soren Simonsen also nabbed TD throws.

The Captains will finish their non-conference slate next Saturday on the road at Shenandoah. Game time Saturday night in Winchester is scheduled for 7 p.m.
