FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Junior forward Carly Utterback scored her second goal of the season, and first game-winning tally, to lead CNU over Methodist University today, 1-0. Her goal came early in the second half as CNU improved to 4-7 overall, 2-2 in the USA South, dropping the Monarchs to the same record.

The Captains dominated possession throughout the game, as the defense held Methodist to just four total shots in the game and two on-goal. Senior keeper Meghan Gumbs made stops on both attempts to post her first shutout of the season.

Offensively, CNU took 23 shots and put 10 on frame. The Captains held a 14-2 edge in shots at halftime, but were unable to come up with a score. With the game still scoreless, it was Utterback's strike just seven and a half minutes into the second stanza that finally put CNU on top. Rookie Chelsea Wolfe played Utterback onsides and the junior buried her shot past the Methodist keeper, Taylor Ross.

Ross had a fine game, stopping nine of the Captains attempts and allowing just the one goal. Utterback led the Captains offense with the score, taking a team-high five shots in the game. Dani Gunderson, Emma O'Reilly and Shaydah Naraghi each added three shots in the win.

CNU will now travel to Rocky Mount, N.C. to take on North Carolina Wesleyan (3-5-1, 1-3-0) in a 2:00 pm game Sunday afternoon.
