NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The reigning USA South Player of the Week kept rolling tonight, as CNU sophomore Jalon Brown scored two more goals to lead a potent Captains attack over St. Mary's College, 5-1. Brown put away his third straight game-winning goal as CNU improved to 6-1-2 on the season with the runaway victory.

The Seahawks (3-7) put themselves in a hole early in the game when CNU's first score of the match was made by a St. Mary's defender. Just under four minutes into the game, sophomore Caleb Lewis sent a low cross over the middle right in front of the goal mouth. The first man to the ball was a Seahawk defender, who came through and connected with a slide for the own goal.

The Captains offense continued to pressure the Seahawks defense, outshooting St. Mary's 12-3 in the first half. Brown scored the eventual gamewinner in the 14th minute of play off an assist from senior midfielder Sean Moriarty. A long through ball from midfield put Brown on behind the defense, where he dribbled by the goalkeeper and walked the ball into the goal.

St. Mary's endured the early onslaught and answered with a goal of their own in the 28th minute of action. Frank VanGessel notched his third goal of the season on a through ball to the right side from Rickie Kalama, cutting the lead to one heading into halftime.

Out of the break, however, CNU blasted two more past the Seahawks keeper in the first 15 minutes to go up big, 4-1. Senior forward Andrew Bonorden found Brown running hard down the right side, where he hammered a line drive top shelf for his seventh goal of the year. He extended his seven-game scoring streak and has points in eight of nine games this year for CNU.

The second goal of the half came when Caleb Lewis put away his second of the year. He and senior Denny Arinello used a nifty combination to score in the 60th minute. Lewis slipped a pass low in the box to Arinello, who poked it back high for Lewis and the drive into the right side of the goal.

Finally, the Captains added the fifth and final goal in the 84th minute when Mark Brewington's shot was saved by the keeper and junior forward Jack Cooper put away the loose ball for the goal.

CNU held a dominant 26-6 advantage in shots, including a 15-1 on-goal edge.

The Captains will now focus on a big conference matchup Saturday night, playing host to Methodist University (7-1-1) at 7:00 pm. The two teams were picked 1-2 in the USA South Athletic Conference Preseason Poll and Methodist is currently ranked 7th in the region, just ahead of the 8th ranked Captains.
