VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The 14th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team extended its winning streak to six games with an incredible effort at the National Training Center as CNU capitalized on its exceptional offensive attack to roll past Virginia Wesleyan, 7-1, on Wednesday evening.
During the contest, nine different Captains recorded a point and seven scored goals as CNU improved to 7-1 on the season. The win also marked the squad's largest margin of victory this year and the team's finest offensive performance.
In the early going, Christopher Newport put its attack on full display as the squad got off to a spectacular start. Following a pair of quick shots in the first two minutes of action,
Breanne Lowe kicked off the scoring surge with a rocket to the back of the cage at the 2:24 mark.
Although Virginia Wesleyan's defense helped quiet the Captains for a brief period, CNU never relented. Eight minutes after lighting up the scoreboard for the first time, the squad extended its lead. On the play,
Emily Gryglewski found
Lindsay Hendricks, who immediately roped a blast into the left corner of the cage at 10:53.
Just over 30 seconds later,
Kelsey Clark gave CNU some breathing room. After having an initial shot blocked by the Marlin defense, the junior Captain ripped another laser that found an opening and gave the team a 3-0 advantage.
Keeping the pressure on, Christopher Newport scored in rapid succession again beginning at the 18:38 mark. The first score came when
Shelby Judkins found
Marcy Hoath with a gorgeous pass before the third-year standout collected her first goal of the season. Less than three minutes later,
Belle Tunstall padded the lead after driving home a deflection to give the Captains a 5-0 edge heading into halftime.
After Virginia Wesleyan went the first half without a single shot or corner, the hosts earned one of each in the early going of the second period. Despite those opportunities, the Marlin attack was quieted when the stingy CNU defense stamped out both attempts.
With VWC showing some life, the Captains went back on the attack. For the second time during the game, Judkins helped set up a teammate as the junior dished to
Sarah Wister, who uncorked a bullet to the back of the cage at 54:58.
Holding a 6-0 lead, CNU came back for one last surge as
Caitlin Cahill found some space and blistered a rope through the Virginia Wesleyan defense to cap the scoring at the 59:20 mark.
Trailing by seven, the Marlins answered with their lone goal of the contest just 14 seconds after Cahill's blast. After earning a penalty stroke, VWC's Kelly Mullahy capitalized on the opportunity and snuck a ball past
Julie Collins to pull the hosts back within six at 7-1.
Overall, CNU out-shot Virginia Wesleyan, 19-3, and held a 15-0 advantage in the first half. Both teams earned three corners during the contest.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Sunday when the Captains host #19 Lynchburg at 2 p.m. CNU will hold its second clinic of the season after that game. Those looking for more information on the instructional session can find it at the following link:
