VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's soccer team exploded for three goals in a rain-shortened game on Sunday, beating Rutgers-Newark, 3-0, with the game called in the 72nd minute. Three different Captains scored in the game, as senior Dani Gunderson added her second goal and first assist of the season.

CNU (1-1) struck quickly against the Scarlet Raiders (0-2), when juniors Emma O'Reilly and Carly Utterback combined for the game's first tally in the 9th minute of action. Utterback slipped a pass to the front of the goal mouth, where O'Reilly put it away for the score.

The Captains offense dominated throughout, but especially in the first half when the shot differential was 22-1 in favor of CNU. Nine of those shots were on frame, including rookie Shaydah Naraghi's first career goal in the 26th minute.

Gunderson had dribbled the ball down to the goal line on the right side before sending a cross into the box. Naraghi got to the ball first, heading in the shot to the middle of the goal.

The score put CNU up 2-0 in the first half as the team kept up the pressure. O'Reilly had eight shots in the game and rookie Chelsea Wolfe added six for the Captains.

Early in the second half, the Captains added an insurance goal when Gunderson laced a hard shot from just inside the 18-yard box into the right corner.

As the second half progressed, a rainstorm entered the area and lightning forced the officials to call the game early, in the 72nd minute of action. In the 26-minute half, CNU added 11 more shots, including three on-goal.  For the game, CNU outshot the Raiders 33-3.

Rookie Elena Currence got her first start in goal on Sunday, stopping all three shots that she faced for the clean sheet.

CNU will now focus toward Wednesday night when they will entertain Virginia Wesleyan in the Captains home opener at 7:00 pm.
