NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With a pair of first-half goals the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans improved to 2-0, snapping a 26-game regular season unbeaten streak for the Captains on the home field. CNU cut the lead in half when senior Andrew Bonorden collected his firist goal of the season, but were unable to net the equalizer and suffered the team's first loss of 2012.

Christopher Newport (0-1-1) last suffered a regular season home setback on August 30, 2008, when York College (Pa.) won in the 2008 Joe Pombriant/CNU Classic. The streak spans 26 games, in which CNU has gone 23-0-3 in home games during the regular season. This year, in the same tournament, the Spartans came away with a 2-1 win.

In the first half, York struck first in the 28th minute, when Brendan Saberton continued his stellar tournament with a goal off an assist by Daniel Baxter. Baxter crossed the ball in from the right side and Saberton flicked the ball toward the left side of the frame. He added a second goal, the eventual gamewinner, just minutes later, when he put away a loose ball in the box on a failed clearance off a corner kick.

With a 2-0 lead in hand, the Spartans controlled possession, but were unable to keep the Captains off the board. CNU scored on a pair of pretty passes in the 63rd minute. With three defenders crashing at the top of the box, Michael Zimmerman snuck a pass off to the right side, where sophomore Caleb Lewis crossed it back over the front of the goalmouth. Bonorden collected the cross and shot it past the goalkeeper into the left side of the goal.

CNU had several close chances late in the game, including an opportunity behind the goalkeeper after a misplayed ball, but could not convert any more scores.

The loss drops CNU to 0-1-1 on the season as they head into a long road swing over the next three weeks. CNU will play their next five games away from home before returning home on Saturday, September 22 against Maryville College in the conference home opener. Next weekend, CNU will head to the Marlins Classic on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College to take on former conference rival Shenandoah University (Fri, 5 pm) and the host Marlins (Sat, 7:30 pm).
