WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team fell 18-5 to No. 12 Catholic University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Lauren King and
Becca Geist each picked up a pair of goals to lead the Captains.
Rachel Tomlinson had a team-high three caused turnovers and picked up three ground balls.
The Captains played a defensive first half as Catholic maintained possession of the ball for a majority of the period winning 11 of 13 draw controls and scoring 12 goals. The first goal of the game came seven minutes in from Catholic's Katie Miller. Mallory Vogel scored her first of four in the half just 30 second later. The Cardinals continued to pile on the goals, scoring their last just a minute before the break.
Catholic kept their momentum going into the second half scoring three goals in the first five minutes to take a 15-0 lead. The Captains got on the board at 21:22 with a man-up goal from
Becca Geist. After one more Cardinal goal the Captains scored again with
Lauren King getting the goal off a pass from Geist.
After one more Cardinal goal, King won the draw control for the Captains and raced down the field scoring her second goal of the game to make it 17-3 with just over 12 minutes remaining. Catholic picked up one more goal before CNU scored two more making it an 18-5 final score. Geist scored her second goal at the 3:36 mark and
Jessica Singer scored with 1:54 remaining.
Goalkeeper,
Hannah Wilkerson, saw 26 shots on goal making eight saves.
Emily Johnson picked up three ground balls for the Captains and had a caused turnover.
This is the eighth time the Captains and Cardinals have met with Catholic now leading the series 8-to-0. Three of those games came in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Catholic will advance to the regional round of the tournament and will play the winner of the Redlands versus Occidental game played tonight at 10:00pm (EST).
The Captains end their season with a program record 15 wins and only four losses, each to nationally ranked opponents. Without a senior on the squad the Captains are looking forward to taking their success in 2012 into the 2013 season.
