WINCHESTER, Va. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team defeated Shenandoah University 14-10 on their way to their sixth consecutive USA South regular season title. The Captains went 7-0 in conference action this season and are currently 11-1 overall.
Both
Kelly Lane and
Ashton Marshall scored four goals today to lead the Captains. Lane also went 2-for-2 on free position shots and was tied for the lead in assists with two, ground balls with three, and draw controls with two. Adding two goals each were
Jessica Singer,
Katie Vu and
Lauren King.
The Captains took a quick three goal lead just five minutes into the game. Samantha Sisson scored her first of five goals for Shenandoah at the 23:37 mark in the first half. The Captains answered with two more goals for a 5-1 lead with 20 minutes left in the half.
The teams traded goals for the rest of the half with the Hornets picking up two in a row at the 6:33 and six minute mark.
The Captains went into the second half with a three goal lead and quickly tacked on three more to extend their lead to six. The teams again traded goals for the remainder of the half but the Captains maintained at least a five goal lead. That was until Shenandoah put in their tenth goal with 19 seconds left on the clock for a 14-10 final score.
The Captains outshot the Hornets 26 to 19, had 16 ground balls to the Hornets' 15, and won 13 of 25 draw controls.
The Captains are heading to the USA South Conference Tournament next weekend in Burlington, N.C. Seeding for the tournament is listed below.
