NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team improved to 15-2 with a 14-6 win over Roanoke. Ashton Marshal scored five to lead the Captains.
CNU scored four straight to start the game with goals from
Becca Geist,
Katie Vu and Marshall. Roanoke answered with four of their own to tie the game with 8:27 remaining in the half. Play went back and forth until CNU scored three in the last three minutes of the half to take a 7-4 lead at the break despite being outshot 18 to 13.
The momentum continued for CNU as they scored two more goals in the first two minutes of the second half to extend their lead to five. Roanoke snuck in a goal at the 27 minute mark before the Captains added three more for a 12-5 lead with 17:35 remaining. The Maroons scored their final goal of the game at 9:10 off a free position. Marshall put two more in for the Captains as time was winding down for a 14-6 final score.
Geist scored three and both Vu and
Jessica Singer scored two in addition to Marshall's five. Also scoring for the Captains was
Rachel Tomlinson and
Lauren King.
Grace Valentine, Marshall and Geist each handed out an assist.
Emily Johnson led the team with five ground balls and
Kelly Lane led with two caused turnovers.
Goalkeeper
Hannah Wilkerson had a great game with 14 saves and only allowed six goals.
This is the third time in program history that the Captains defeated the Maroons. The series record between the two teams is 6-to-3 in favor of the Maroons.
The Captains return to action on May 5th as they host top-ranked Salisbury at 1:00pm.
