USA South CHAMPS! Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Shenandoah 13-9 for Title

BURLINGTON, N.C. – For the seventh consecutive year the Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team earned the USA South Conference Tournament title. The Captains defeated Shenandoah 13-9 in the championship game. Sophomore Ashton Marshall was selected as the tournament MVP after leading the team with 10 points from seven goals and three assists.

The Captains won the opening draw control and Marshall scored her first of four goals just 35 seconds into the game. Shenandoah's Liz Bereit scored the next goal of the contest nine minutes later to even the score.

The next two minutes of the game saw three goals from CNU for a three goal lead. The Captains scored two more and Shenadoah netted three before the break for a 6-4 halftime score.

The Captains started the second half with three quick goals and the Hornets answered with three of their own for a 10-7 score with 18:43 remaining. CNU maintained control of the game and scored four unanswered goals to extend their lead to six.

Shenandoah was able to pull within four with two goals in the last three and half minutes of the game for a 13-9 final.

Jessica Singer and Marshall each scored four goals in the contest while Rachel Tomlinson added two. Becca Geist led the Captains with four ground balls and Stephanie Green had a team-high three caused turnovers. Hannah Wilkerson collected six saves.

Six Captains earned a spot on the All-Tournament.
