Captains Advance to Championship with 16-5 Win Over Ferrum; Lauren King Scored Five

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team cruised by Ferrum College, 16-5,  in the USA South Conference Tournament semifinal game and will play Shenandoah University tomorrow at 1:00pm in the championship game. Junior Lauren King scored five goals to lead the Captains and Courtney Hamm scored a team-high three goals for the Panthers.

King started the scoring for CNU just 20 seconds into the contest with an unassisted goal. Rachel Tomlinson, Katie Vu and Ashton Marshall each scored in the next six minutes to put the Captains up 4-0.

Vanessa Torres scored the first goal for the Panthers off a pass from Sydney Hewartson at 17:37. The Captains answered with four straight goals to extend their lead to seven. Caila Cummings scored for the Panthers just 20 seconds later to make it 8-to-2 with seven and a half minutes left in the half.

The Captains put two more in before time expired for a 10-2 halftime score.

The Captains continued to dominate in the second half, tacking on six more goals and allowing only three from Ferrum. Courtney Hamm scored all three goals for the Panthers.

The Captains outshot the Panthers 36 to 18 and had 26 ground balls to Ferrum's 12. The Panthers edged CNU in draw controls winning 12 of 23.

In addition to King's five, Jessica Singer and Marshall each scored three while Tomlinson scored two for the Captains. Marshall and defender Monica Evans each caused two turnovers and Morgan Smith led with four draw controls. Goalkeeper Hannah Wilkerson improved to 12-1 with five saves on the day.

Arielle Boyd led the Panthers in ground balls with three while Caila Cummings earned a team-high five draw controls. Amanda Cheney had twelve saves in goal for the Panthers.

CNU advances to the championship game tomorrow at 1:00pm where they face No. 2 Shenandoah who defeated Greensboro 15-7 . The Captains and Hornets met last week with the Captains coming out on top 14-10.
