CNU Beats Shenandoah, 9-0, In USA South Men's Tennis Tournament

Captains advance to play at 2 pm Saturday

BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Christopher Newport (11-9) made quick work of seventh-seeded Shenandoah University (0-13) in the 2012 USA South Tournament Semifinals today, shutting out the Hornets, 9-0. Robbie Wagner played at No. 1 singles for the first time this season, winning 6-0, 6-0.

CNU freshman Will Sloan combined with Kyle Tobin for an 8-2 win at the top doubles position. At No. 2, Sky Masand and Robbie Wagner won, 8-0, to help CNU open up a 3-0 lead after doubles.

Wagner's straight-set win at the top spot highlighted a dominant performance by the Captains singles players, as CNU cruised to five wins and a forfeit, dropping just four games throughout. Sloan, Thomas Whaling and Chris Yost picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins at positions 3-5.

CNU advances to the Tournament Semifinals on Saturday at 2:00 pm, when they will take on #3 Averett University. In the regular season, the Cougars nipped CNU with a 5-4 victory in Danville.
