NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team improved to 7-1 with a 19-13 victory over Lynchburg College.
Ashton Marshall and
Becca Geist each scored four to lead the Captains.
CNU jumped out to a 4-to-0 lead over the Hornets just over three minutes into the game.
Maddy Connor scored first at 28:09 followed just 15 seconds later with a goal from
Jessica Singer assisted by
Rachel Tomlinson. Under a minute later Marshall scored her first of the game off a pass from
Katie Vu.
Lynchburg called a timeout after falling behind by four and scored three unanswered goals in two minutes to pull within one. The two teams traded pairs of goals for a 6-5 score with 13:49 left in the half.
The Captains extended their lead to three with goals from Geist and Singer. The Hornets put one more in the net before the Captains scored three with 2:38 remaining. Both teams added one goal in the last minute and a half of the game for a 12-7 Captains' lead at the half.
The teams traded goals for most of the second half with CNU ending the game with three straight goals for a 19-13 victory.
Following Marshall and Geist were Singer and
Rachel Tomlinson with three goals apiece. Marshall led with 10 ground balls and Geist had a team-high four caused turnovers.
Goalkeeper
Hannah Wilkerson made nine saves in her seventh win of the season.
Lynchburg was led by Kendall Adkin and Lesley Buckingham who each scored four goals.
The Captains travel to Methodist on Saturday with a start time of 3:00pm.
