Ashton Marshall Scores 10 as Captains Defeat Ferrum 26-11

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team scored a program record 26 goals as they defeated Ferrum College on Captains Field today. Ashton Marshall scored 10 goals for the Captains setting a program record for goals in a game.

The Panthers jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first 13 minutes of the game with all three goals coming from Brooke Hewartson. The Captains started scoring at the 17:17 mark with a goal from Lauren King and was followed by two from Jessica Singer to tie the game.

The two teams traded goals until CNU took a 7-5 lead with back-to-back goals from Marshall. The Panthers scored one more before CNU extended their lead to four with three straight goals. Ferrum scored two before Katie Vu put away the Captains' last goal of the half. With 1:16 remaining Hewartson scored again for Ferrum to make it an 11-9 halftime score in favor of the Captains.

Rachel Tomlinson scored her first goal of the game just three minutes into the second half. Just a minute later the Panthers scored off a free position to pull back within two. CNU took control at this point scoring seven consecutive goals to take a 19-10 lead. Ferrum snuck one more goal in before the Captains ran away with the game finishing it off with seven more goals for a 26-11 final score.

The Captains outshot the Panthers 49 to 18 and had 20 ground balls to Ferrum's three.

The win improves the Captains to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The loss drops Ferrum to 6-4 and 2-2 in conference.

The Captains return to action Wednesday as they host Lynchburg at 5:00pm.
