Captains Down Greensboro 19-9

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team cruised past Greensboro College in USA South Action today, 19-9. The win improves the Captains to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Sophomore Ashton Marshall led the Captains with four goals.

The Captains jumped out to a 3-0 lead just three minutes into play. Junior Becca Geist got the first goal while Marshall and sophomore Jessica Singer scored the next two off free positions. The Pride answered with three unanswered goals in a span of five minutes.

The Captains put the next two in the net for a two goal lead. Greensboro scored one more before the Captains went on a four-goal run to end the half with a five goal lead.

Marshall scored her third goal of the game to start off the scoring in the second half making it 10-5. After trading goals the Captains went on their second four-goal run of the game to go up 16-6 with 13 minutes left on the clock.

Both teams netted three in the last 12 minutes of the game for a 19-9 final and the Captains third straight victory. The Pride dropped to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in USA South play.

Following Marshall's four goals were Singer and Geist with three apiece. Emily Johnson and Lauren King each scored a pair.  Geist and Morgan Smith each had two caused turnovers while Maddy Connor and King each collected four draw controls.

The Captains outshot Greensboro 32-18 and won 20 of 30 draw controls.

CNU returns to action as they host Agnes Scott College on Wednesday, March 14, at 3:00pm.
