Captains Face Tough Conference Weekend on the Road

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Both Christopher Newport University basketball teams will be in action this weekend, facing some stiff USA South Athletic Conference competition. Head coach Jon Waters and the women's team will travel to face Meredith College (5-13, 3-9) on Saturday and then on to Ferrum College (15-4, 10-2) for the front end of a doubleheader on Sunday. The men's team has just one game, a 4:00 pm tilt at Ferrum on Super Bowl Sunday.

The women's team will first look to extend its 11-game winning streak facing league-leading scorer Megan Rahn and the Avenging Angels on Saturday. Rahn is averaging 24.1 points per game this season and also ranks fourth in the league in rebounding, grabbing 8.9 rebounds per contest.

On the other end of the floor, CNU features a balanced scoring attack led by sophomores Tia Perry and Nicole Mitchell. Perry, 11.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, and Mitchell, 11.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, have led the way all season, while freshman Camry Green has come on strong in the second half, averaging 10.5 points and 9.3 rebounds over the last four games.

Ferrum also features a balanced attack, with three players averaging in double figures this season. Junior guard Tesla Akers leads the way with 13.3 points per game, knocking down 2.3 three-pointers per game.

Both women's games tip at 2:00 pm, and a live video webcast can be found at CNUsports.com.

The men's team will face a very tough Ferrum squad immediately following the women's finish, tipping at approximately 4:00 pm. The Panthers are led by senior point guard Marcus Mayo with 15.9 points and 4.9 assists per game. Currently second in the USA South, Ferrum is riding a four-game win streak.

A win for the Captains would clinch the 2012 regular season championship and top seed in the 2012 USA South Tournament. CNU will lean on freshmen breakout starters Mike Cherry and Nik Biberaj, complimenting league-leading scorer Conley Taylor well so far this season. Taylor is pouring in more than 20 points a game, but the rookie point and center are also averaging double figures for CNU this season.
