Captains Beat Bridgewater in Men's Tennis Action, 8-1

CNU sweeps doubles play

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Though half of its singles starters the previous day against James Madison were not in the singles lineup, CNU beat a team that is predicted to finish second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to Washington & Lee, which handed CNU a 5-4 defeat in the Captains' only other match against a Division III opponent so far.

The Eagles, with four freshman starters among the seven who faced the Captains, are in their first year under the guidance of Marty Perry, a Hampton native who has been a Division III National Coach of the Year for the last three seasons with Chicago (women in 2009 and '10, men in '11).

Robbie Wagner and Chris Yost registered the only service break of their match to win 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.
Gian Heyer and Tom Whaling broke with a 6-5 lead to go ahead 7-5, and then Heyer held for an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles.

At No. 1 singles, Eric Shulman saved four set points while serving at 4-5 in the second set, then went on to break serve and hold to beat Pete Hawkins 6-3, 7-5. That victory provided a clinching 5-0 lead.

Shulman's victory came just a couple of minutes before sophomore Sky Masand won his match. Masand was on the verge of victory, leading 5-2 in the second set, but his opponent, Sam Churchill, won four consecutive games for a 6-5 edge. Masand held serve to force a tiebreaker, then won it.

Will Sloan, in his first dual-match appearance as a Captain, came from a set behind to pull even by winning the second set. Because the team match had been clinched, a 10-point tiebreaker was contested. Sloan trailed 1-6 in it but saved match point and came back to win it 11-9.

Tom Whaling earned the last victory of the day on his second match point in another decisive 10-point tiebreaker.
