NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team dropped their season opener to the #14 Generals of Washington and Lee University 10-9. Sophomore
Jessica Singer's three goals led the Captains while the Generals were led by Alli Shearin with four goals.
Sophomore
Maddy Connor won the opening draw control for the Captains and they maintained possession for almost the entire first five minutes of the game, forcing turnovers both times the Generals had the ball. During that time the Captains jumped out to a 3-0 lead with Singer getting the first goal followed by tallies from
Lauren King and
Ashton Marshall.
The Generals evened the score at 3-3 after converting on three free position shots. With 10:50 left in the half the Generals took the lead with Shearin's first goal of the game. Connor scored next for the Captains off a free position to tie the game once again. But Washington and Lee scored three in the last seven and a half minutes of play for a 7-4 halftime lead.
CNU jumped out in the second half and scored three unanswered goals to tie the game at 7-7. But again, Washington and Lee scored three straight goals from free positions giving them the 10-7 advantage. With five and a half minutes left in the game Singer scored her third goal of the game to bring the Captains to within two. Just over a minute later the Captains were awarded a free position and King capitalized to bring the Captains to within one goal with 4:16 remaining.
The Generals won the final draw control and did their best to maintain possession for the remainder of the game. But a turnover for the Generals gave the Captains possession with just over a minute left. In that minute they were awarded two free possessions but the Generals defense was able to hold off the Captains' comeback.
The Generals outshot the Captains 24 to 18 and had 13 draw controls to the Captains eight.
Hannah Wilkerson picked up eight saves for the Captains while
Monica Evans caused three turnovers.
Emily Johnson led with four ground balls and also had two caused turnovers.
The Captains return to action on Thursday, February 23, as they host St. Mary's College at 4:00pm.
