NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Head coach
John Krikorian and the Christopher Newport University men's basketball team returns to the hardwood for the first time since locking up the top seed in the upcoming USA South Conference Tournament. The Captains (18-4, 9-0) will take on Greensboro College (14-8, 5-4) at 4:00 pm, the second game of a conference doubleheader.
The Captains are coming off a win on the road at Ferrum College that saw CNU lock up the USA South Regular Season Championship. With three games to go, CNU has assured itself a first round bye and a home game in the USA South semifinals on Friday, February 24.
Earlier this season, the Captains beat the Pride in Greensboro with a dominant second-half performance, winning 91-69 on the road. CNU outscored the Pride 51-28 in the second half and got double figure scoring from five different players in the game.
Senior
Conley Taylor continues to lead the way for CNU, averaging a league-best 20.8 points per game. Sophomore
Tra Benefield returned from an ankle injury and scored 19 points in his first game back, seeing his season scoring average increase to 16.2 points per game. Rookie tandem
Mike Cherry and
Nik Biberaj have been impressive in the second half of the season and are both also averaging double figures, with 11.6 and 10.9 points per game, respectively.
The Pride are led by senior T.J. Holman with over 14 points per game paired with 2.6 steals per game on the defensive end. Sophomore Damian Dixon is at nearly 13 points per game while the front court tandem of Luqman Tijani and Brock Moorman are also in double figures.
