NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- This weekend, the Christopher Newport men's basketball team will host the 2012 CNU/Point Plaza Invitational, welcoming in three teams from out of state for the in-season tourney. First, 12th-ranked Birmingham-Southern College, from Alabama, will take on John Carroll University out of Ohio Saturday in a 2:00 pm tipoff. The host Captains will then face off against Delaware-based Wesley College immediately following at 4:00 pm.
The consolation and championship games will be held Sunday at 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, respectively. The winners of each of Saturday's games will advance to play in the championship on Sunday.
The Captains have started the year 2-0 with wins over No. 24 Randolph-Macon College and Salisbury University. Three players are in double figures early, with junior
Tra Benefield leading the charge at 21.5 points per game. Sophomores
Mike Cherry (17.5) and
Nik Biberaj (15.0) round out the leaders for CNU, as the trifecta is also hauling in a combined 19.5 rebounds per game as well.
B-SC enters this weekend's tournament with a 2-1 overall mark. The Panthers won their season-opening tournament with victories against Ozarks and Huntingdon, but dropped their most recent outing against USA South foe LaGrange College. The No. 12 team in the D3hoops.com Preseason National Rankings, Birmingham-Southern is led by senior forward Zac Richards, nearly averaging a double-double with 20.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.
John Carroll is 1-1 with a win over Grove City before falling to host Penn State-Behrend in their opening weekend swing. The Blue Streaks are getting 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game from Kyle Hubbard, and are shooting over 42% from the field in their first two games as a team. JCU finished with an 18-win season a year ago, earning the top seed in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.
Finally, the Wolverines of Wesley College return to the Freeman Center for the Point Plaza Invitational for the second straight year. This year, Wesley has opened the year 3-0 with a win of the Widener Tip-Off for Autism Awareness Tournament and then a home game over Neumann. Paul Reynolds, a player who broke the Freeman Center record for free-throws made in a game last season, is leading the way in his senior campaign. He has poured in 17.7 points per game while junior center David Langan is adding 16 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest.
