Greensboro Stuns 13th-Ranked Captains in USA South Semifinals, 2-0

Captains await NCAA Selection Show Monday in hopes of at-large bid

MARTINSVILLE, Virginia – Fifth-seeded Greensboro College lived up to its billing as the top defensive team in the conference with a 2-0 upset of top-seeded Christopher Newport University in semifinal action Friday at Smith River Sports Complex.  The Pride used a goal in each half to secure a date in Saturday's championship.

The 13th-ranked Captains (15-3-2) won the regular season championship and ranked fourth in this week's NCAA Regional Rankings, but is now forced to wait for the NCAA National Selection Committee's selection release on Monday to see if they qualified for the postseason NCAA tournament. The Pride advances to the USA South title game to play for the league's automatic bid. The selection show is scheduled for 1:00 pm Monday afternoon at NCAA.com.

Greensboro's Drew Clukey opened the scoring at the 32:45 mark off of assists from Craig Gage and Logan Paussa.  That score would hold up until the 58:00 mark when Greensboro would tack on an insurance goal off of a CNU own goal.

Greensboro's Manbi Nyepon, a First Team All-Conference selection at goalkeeper, tallied 10 saves en route to posting the shutout. The Pride came into the game allowing a league-low 16 goals this season with nine shutouts.

CNU would hold a decisive advantage in shots 21-8, including a late barrage in the final minutes with the Captains pressing offensively. The Captains put 10 shots on-frame, more than the total number of shots taken by the Pride.

The loss was just the third of the season for CNU and fifth non-winning result. Two of those results came to the Pride, who tied the Captains, 1-1, in the regular season.

Greensboro (11-4-4) will face the winner of third-seeded Methodist University and second-seeded Averett University.  Saturday's championship is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
