NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With a pair of first-half goals, the Averett University Cougars (8-3, 6-0) held off Christopher Newport in women's soccer action today, in a 2-1 final at Captains Field. Rookie Chelsea Wolfe scored with a blistering 35-yard strike in the second half, but the Captains slipped to 5-8 overall, 3-3 in the USA South with the setback.

CNU fell behind in the opening stanza, when Camilla Sjoren played a long over ball down the right side of the field. Sandra Johansson reached the ball first and within her first couple touches, slipped a low bouncing shot under CNU goalkeeper Meghan Gumbs

Leading scorer Pernilla Milton then put the Cougars up, 2-0, with a tally in the 28th minute. Johansson took a corner kick for Averett and Milton put away the score on a failed clearance.

The CNU offense continued to increase the pressure on Averett, outshooting the Cougars 15-6 in the game, including an 8-3 advantage in the first half. CNU peppered Malin Borjesson with five shots on-frame in the first half, but the Cougar keeper stopped all five attempts.

Staring at a two-goal deficit in the second half, it wasn't until the 74th minute that the Captains would cut the lead in half. The reigning USA South Rookie of the Week, Chelsea Wolfe, blistered a shot into the upper 90 off an assist by junior Carly Utterback. The strike came from over 30 yards out in the middle of the field.

The Captains continued to throw more players forward, but were unable to convert a game-tying goal. The Captains put eight shots on-goal to Averett's two in the game, and outshot the Cougars 15-6 overall.

CNU will return to action next weekend for the final home regular season games of the year. The Captains will play Peace College on Saturday, October 13 at 2:00 pm, and Meredith College on Sunday, October 14 at 2:00 pm.
