CNU Soccer Takes on Averett Saturday Afternoon

Women play at Noon, men at 2:00 pm

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Averett University will travel to Hampton Roads Saturday for a pair of USA South Conference soccer matchups against the Captains. Christopher Newport will play host to a soccer doubleheader at Captains Field on Saturday, as the women will kickoff at Noon, followed immediately by the men's game at approximately 2:00 pm.

First, the CNU women's team will look to avenge a 2011 loss to the Cougars in Danville, the first loss the Captains ever suffered in league play under head coach Ruth Keegan. Averett is 7-3 overall this season, tied atop the conference standings with a perfect 5-0 record against league competition so far this season. The Cougars boast a veteran group led by juniors Pernilla Milton and Suvi Piipponen. Milton has three game-winning goals and leads the team with 20 points, while Piipponen has locked down the defense, starting all 10 games and chipping in five points.

The Captains have won three straight, improving to 5-7 overall with a 3-2 mark in USA South action. The offense has been stellar this season, averaging nearly three goals per game, and is led by junior forward Emma O'Reilly with 11 goals so far. Senior Dani Gunderson has added 20 points of her own on eight goals and four assists and 11 different Captains have scored this year for CNU.

Kickoff is set for 12:00 pm, with live stats available at CNUsports.com.

Following the women's game, CNU will take on the Averett men's team at approximately 2:00 pm. The Cougars are at .500 on the season, with a 4-4-2 mark overall, 2-2 in USA South. Sophomore Kevin Vigebo has three goals and three assists to lead the way, while senior Richard Bjornander has added three goals.

CNU will look to extend an 8-game unbeaten streak and six-game winning streak as the Captains continue to play well. Head coach Steve Shaw has guided CNU to a 7-1-2 overall mark, including a 3-0-1 record against league competition. Sophomore Jalon Brown has led the way, scoring in all but one game so far this year with eight goals and three assists, while senior Andrew Bonorden is also in double figures with four goals and three assists. Defensively, CNU has been stellar, allowing just a 0.96 goals against average.
