CNU Heads to Preseason Favorite N.C. Wesleyan

Captains take five-game win streak to Rocky Mount

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The top two teams in the 2011-12 Preseason USA South Coaches Poll will face off on Saturday, as the team picked to win the league, N.C. Wesleyan (6-6, 0-0) will open their conference season with a game against the team picked to finish second, Christopher Newport University (9-3, 1-0). The Captains will take a five-game winning streak on the road to face the Bishops on Saturday at 4:00 pm.

The game will be broadcast live on Xtra 99.1 FM, the CNU/Pepsi Radio Network, and will also be presented in a live video webcast at CNUsports.com.

CNU has won seven of their last eight games, including a road victory over Methodist University to open USA South action last time out, 80-75. Rookie point guard Mike Cherry has excelled since joining the starting lineup before the holiday break, scoring in double figures in five straight games. Senior guard Conley Taylor is leading the USA South in scoring, with 21.5 points per game.

The Bishops are on a small three-game skid, but are an athletic group that returned all five starters from an NCAA Tournament team a year ago. Four players are averaging double figures for N.C. Wesleyan, led by senior guard Matt Dougherty, with 13.2 points per game. Alex Murray is leading the team in rebounding, with 7.8 boards per game, and is also averaging 11.1 points per game.

N.C. Wesleyan won both matchups a year ago en route to a conference championship. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at tip.
