DANVILLE, Va. -- In the first road game of the 2011 USA South regular season, the Christopher Newport University women's soccer team (3-6, 1-1) fell in historical fashion to the Averett Cougars (7-1, 1-0). The Cougars struck five times in the first half, going on to win 5-0 for Averett's first ever win over the Captains, in 17 tries.
The home team got on the board just 3:24 into the game when Taylor Ortman launched a 40-yard bomb from the middle of the field that found the back of the net. Just a minute and a half later, leading scorer Pernilla Milton connected into the upper-left corner off an assist from Mathilda Hansson.
The Captains defense would allow three more goals in the first half, as Sandra Johansson, Nadia Sandau and Milton all scored to give Averett a big lead in the first half.
CNU managed just four shots in the first half, one on-goal. In the second half, the Captains raised the offensive pressure, taking seven shots and putting three on-frame, but reigning USA South Defensive Player of the Week Samantha Lupo made four saves to preserve the shutout.
Sophomore
Emma O'Reilly had the best chance in the first half for Christopher Newport, as she found a loose ball in the box and put a hard shot to the right side of the goal, but Lupo made the diving stop.
Dani Gunderson, Elise Haug and
Annemarie Weaver each took one shot on goal in the game also.
CNU junior goalkeeper
Meghan Gumbs faced nine shots on-goal in the first half, making four saves. The CNU defense held Averett to just three second-half shots as the final shot tally was 13-11 in favor of the Cougars. CNU took seven corners to Averett's three.
The Captains return to action this Sunday, October 2 at 1:00 pm for a USA South game at Ferrum College.
